Event Notices & Users Online

What would be the best way to implement:

1. A brief pop up notice ( or any kind really, something like the message center would work too) that notifies users when something has happened, such as a pet selling, etc.


and 2.

How would you write the code to show the users actually logged in at the time --- I guess it would show on index.php.

bumping this again after two weeks to see if anyone can please help, more than anything really need to be able to have a notice appear for the member when something happens ( like something selling, or someone sends them a gift, etc )

Doesn't have to be fancy, just anything at all to give a notice to them.

I have sales set up but I can't get it to notify members that something sold, or who it sold to etc.

Take a look at the code for the PM system as that would be a good way to notify a member of something. :)
