Alternate images, how do they work?

I'm wondering how the alternate image system works. This is how I WANT it to work:

When adopting AdoltableA, you have a chance at getting a different colored version, such as a black one. If they receive the black one, it has a different level-up line.

Will the alternate version stay throughout or will they have a chance to return to the default after they level up?

Thank you for replying! I hope you don't mind me asking another question. None of my images are showing! If I use a URL they work but any images I upload to the server don't work...

If it matters, I'm uploading GIF images of about 15 KB each through the admin.php?set=adopts&do=uploadimg page.

Hm.. I'm not sure about that, you'll have to check with another Admin.

I figured out my problem, I accidentally had a space in the site name, so it would upload the image to the directory with a space.
